Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the medical specialty that focuses on the health needs of pregnant women and their babies. You typically begin to see an obstetrician when you find out that you're pregnant and continue to see them until after your baby is born.

Most patients see their obstetrician once a month for the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Then, you have biweekly appointments until week 36. After week 36, you have weekly appointments until your baby is born. You might need more frequent appointments if you have a high-risk pregnancy.

During these appointments, your obstetrician monitors your health and the health and development of your baby. They provide ultrasounds and other tests to evaluate your pregnancy and ensure everything is progressing as expected.

The providers at ThriveOB and Women's Wellness also offer and can help with surrogacy.

What services are included in obstetrics?

The team at ThriveOB and Women's Wellness provide a comprehensive range of obstetrics services, including:

  • Pre-conceptual Counseling, Evaluating & Treating Infertility
  • Prenatal appointments
  • In-office ultrasounds
  • Genetic Screening
  • In-office Non-Stress Test (NST)

The team also offers expert care for high-risk pregnancies, including but not limited to, multiple gestations (twins), gestational diabetes, hypertension disorders of pregnancy, and incompetent cervix. They are also experienced with breech or transverse presentation.

The team aims to help you have the type of delivery you desire, including unmedicated deliveries, Cesarean deliveries, and vaginal birth after Cesarean. Their goal is to support you from the moment you discover that you're pregnant until your baby is born and thriving.

Why is it important to have an obstetrician?

Your body changes significantly during pregnancy to accommodate the life growing inside it. Additionally, your baby develops from a small cluster of cells into a tiny, fully formed human being in just 40 weeks.

An obstetrician has extensive training in what happens to both you and your baby during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Your provider monitors your pregnancy and can diagnose any potential issues as early as possible, offering treatment to protect you and your baby.

Your obstetrician provides information to help you anticipate what changes during each stage of pregnancy. They answer your questions and help you develop your confidence as a new mother.
