What is a hysteroscopy? 

A surgical procedure that lets our gynecologist, Dr. Jennifer Moreira, examine the cervix and uterus visually through a thin and flexible device with its own light source. As well as simple visual assessment of cervical and uterine tissue, hysteroscopy is also used for: 

Hysteroscopy can be done in-office, with or without local anesthetic. More complex procedures may be performed in operating rooms under general or regional anesthetics. 

Why might I need a hysteroscopy? 

Hysteroscopy is often the next step in diagnosis after discussing your symptoms with Dr. Moreira, a physical exam, and/or test results. You may have experienced: 

Hysteroscopies can’t be performed on pregnant women. There may be other conditions or symptoms for which Dr. Moreira may recommend a hysteroscopy. 

What to expect during the procedure

Hysteroscopies are often performed in an outpatient setting, though they may be necessary when you’re hospitalized for related conditions. The general procedure typically includes these steps:
