Who Needs an STI Test and How Often?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are more common than many people realize. In fact, public health experts estimate that about one in five Americans is living with an STI at any given time.
At ThriveOB and Women's Wellness in Barrington, Illinois, our women’s health team provides confidential testing for STIs as part of our women’s health and preventive care services. Regular screenings not only protect your health but also safeguard the well-being of your sexual partners. Read on to learn when it may be time to schedule an STI test and what to expect.
When to schedule an STI test
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends STI testing for all adults at some point in their lives. For example, every American should get tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at least once.
Certain situations call for more frequent testing. According to CDC guidelines, women should consider:
- Annual gonorrhea and chlamydia testing for sexually active women under 25
- The same yearly testing for women over 25 who have new or multiple partners
- Syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C testing for all pregnant women
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea testing for pregnant women who may be at higher risk
For sexually active gay and bisexual men, the CDC recommends:
- Testing for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea at least once a year
- HIV testing at least once a year
- Hepatitis C testing annually if living with HIV
Your provider may also recommend additional testing if you engage in oral or anal sex, such as throat or rectal swabs.
At ThriveOB and Women's Wellness, we take a compassionate, judgment-free approach to STI testing. Being open with your provider about your sexual history helps us recommend the right screenings for you and ensures you get the best possible care.
What to expect with STI testing
Testing is quick, simple, and confidential. Different infections require different types of tests:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea are usually detected with a urine sample or swab
- HIV testing requires a small blood sample
- Other infections may involve additional blood work or swabs
If you’re concerned about possible exposure, we do our best to offer timely appointments, including same-day availability when possible.
The encouraging news is that many STIs are treatable, often with just a short course of antibiotics.
